Installation FAQ

What is HDTV?

HDTV (High-Definition Television) is a form of video display that offers superior resolution than current televisions based on the NTSC standard. HDTV is a digital broadcasting format where the broadcast transmits widescreen pictures with more detail and quality than found in a standard TV. HDTV is a type of Digital Television broadcast, and is considered to be the best quality DTV format available. Types of HDTV displays include plasma, LCD, and rear screen selection; however, not all of those devices are necessarily HDTV capable. To be truly HD capable, a display device mush be able to display 720p video, 1080i video, or higher (1080p is the optimal). In order to achieve an optimal HDTV effect, you must have a High Definition source (HD-DVD, HD Cable etc.), and be displaying it through a high definition video display.

Do I need Dolby 5.1 surround sound in my boardroom?

If you are like most offices, the answer to this question is no. 5.1 surround sound was developed for movie watchers to give the audio illusion of being surrounded by sound. Many TV programs and DVDs are encoded with Dolby 5.1 audio, but most corporate presentations are not. If you're planning on watching DVD's in your boardroom on a semi-regular basis and you can't stand watching a movie in stereo or mono, then go for the Dolby 5.1. Otherwise, save yourself the money and the hassles involved with speaker placement and processor setup. It's unlikely your boardroom is acoustically optimized to watch movies in anyways!

What is the largest screen I can get with a projector?

Theoretically, you can go as big as you want with a projector, however, the larger the screen the dimmer the image will get. Imagine the screen like a piece of toast, and the light from your projector as butter. If you spread your light over a larger surface, it has to be thinner to cover the screen, resulting in lower brightness levels on the screen. In reality most boardrooms rarely go larger than 100" diagonal (4:3 ratio). The reasons for this are many, but include the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, and the comfort of a large screen. Bigger isn't always better, there is a science to choosing the correct screen size!

What size conduit do I need to my boardroom table if I want computer connections in the table?

In most cases a 2" dedicated conduit will meet your requirements. The 2" conduit gives you the room required to get a number of cables to that location and also allows for the quick an easy pass-through of pre-finished VGA cables with the large head connector intact. This will save you installation time, and money. If you cannot, or do not have a 2" conduit in place, there are options to allow you to work with smaller conduit by converting your VGA cables to CAT5 cable. In many cases this is an excellent solution but it also is more expensive as you need a VGA/CAT5 converter and receiver at each end of the connection.
